Rainy Days

I don't know about you, but I really don't like rainy days...especially 3 days of it! However, I still see rainy days as the best days for sitting down and colouring. I used to sit and colour for hours when I was younger on days like these. There are tons of free colouring pages available on the web. Just Google using the search terms : free coloring pages

Public Works Day

What a beautiful day to celebrate Public Works Day. The children's department was invited to help out at Public Works Day. There were tons of kids (115) who participated in the arts and crafts activity. The gardeners supplied the plant pots and we supplied the paint. The kids did a great job of decorating their pots. Then, they got to choose a flower to plant in it.

Anne Renaud visit

We had the pleasure of having Anne Renaud visit our library today. She spoke to the Grade 5 class from Merton Elementary. She has written several nonfiction children's books. One of the books, A Bloom for Friendship, was especially interesting to me as it dealt with the Canadian soldiers and the liberation of Holland. My father was part of a regiment that help the Dutch. I recommend that everyone have a look at the book and next year, go to Ottawa and attend the Tulip Festival.

Exploding Volcanoes

This morning we had exploding volcanoes in our auditorium. McGill Redpath Museum came to the library to talk about volcanoes. It was a very interesting presentation. Following that, the kids got to make their own volcanoes.

Receipe for exploding volcanoes:

playdough ( 1 cup of flour, 1/4 salt and 1/2 c of water)
a paper plate
2 paper cups
1/4 cup of baking soda
1/2 cup of vinegar
paint optional
red food coloring optional

Put one cup on the plate. Shape playdough around the cup. Put the baking soda in the cup. You can paint your volcanoe if you choose. Pour the vinegar into the other cup. You can add red food colouring if you choose (mix well) and then quckly add it to your volcano mixture. See what happens!!!

So many new books...I don't know where to start!

This has been a great week. So many books have come into the library that I have been waiting for. All of them are part of a series:

Sisters Grimm: Book 7 - The Everafter War by Michael Buckley
The Awakening by Kelly Armstrong
Fagile Eternity by Melissa Marr

I am also reading a really funny book called: The Wizard, the Witch and 2 girls from Jersey by Lisa papademtriou.

Let me know what books you are reading!
