New Moon now in theaters

So, New Moon is now out in the theaters.  I went last night to the advance opening with my daughter.  She was super-excited to see the movie, well, to see Jacob.  I have to say that it was much better than Twilight but I still stand firm that the books are so much better than the movies.  What do you think???

City of Bones - on audiobook

I am currently listening to City of Bones by Cassandra Claire.  I had heard the hype on this series awhile ago but never got around to reading it.  I even had the book in my house without realizing it ...  it was a birthday present to my son a few years back.  The library just received the audio version of the book so I grabbed it because of my long car treks back and forth from work.  May I say that this is a great book!  I sat in the parking lot of the library listening to the story, not wanting to go to work so that I could hear the rest of the chapter.  Audiobooks are a great way to keep up on your reading, especially if you are in the car for a long time or taking public transit.  Come and see me for some good audiobook suggestions :)

Website of the Day

Do you like dinosaurs?  Do you want to find out some interesting facts about them?  This past week our storytimes were all on dinosaurs.  Did you know that Brachylophosaurus may be its official name, but many affectionately know this relatively "new" dinosaur as "Elvis," due to its unusual head crest that resembles the famous rock 'n' roll singer's hair.

Check out this link to the Discovery Channel:  http://dsc.discovery.com/dinosaurs/    for more interesting facts about dinosaurs.

Happy 40th Anniversary Sesame Street

I don't know if anyone has noticed but on the Google homepage for the past week, there have been different characters from Seseame Street featured.  This is all in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Seseame Street.  I loved watching it when I was growing up.  Who was your favourite character?  Mine was the Grouch.  Some of my most favourite scenes:  Grover doing near and far.

Children's Book of the Month

The book of the month is "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian". I really enjoyed this book because of the subject matter but also the style of writing. Sherman Alexie is brillant in conveying the important issues that surround the main character but at the same time, not being too preachy about it. Go to our on-line bookclub at: http://elcslplkidsbook.weebly.com/

New Moon

The hype is now starting! All I hear in my house these days is "New Moon this, New Moon that", along with "Jasper, he is so cute", or "I love Jacob". This is what you get when you live with two girls :)

So, in order to help everyone along, I have posted a countdown calander to when the movie is coming out.

Extra incentives to come to the library???? On November 15th, we have a jeopardy type game going on called Twihard. If you think you know everything there is to know Twilight, then come and play the game with us. The person who knows the most will win 2 tickets to the movie, so come and play!!

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

So, I saw the movie last week and it was pretty good. I would say that it was a nice companion to the book but the book was by far much better. I spoke to a few people who had not read the book and they were confused at times in the movie. We had quite a few copies of the book at the library, so come and read what you missed out on or just re-read the story for fun!

Graphic Novels

Alright, I have to admit that I really don't like graphic novels. I don't see the appeal to them at all. However, I do keep trying. I have finally found a decent one that I can recommend to others...Coraline by Neil Gaiman. The story was pretty good and the illustrations were decent and represented the story well. So, go ahead and give it a read!

This being said about graphic novels, the department is fortunate to have Jen and Katie who love graphic novels and can give you lots of good recommendations.

If I Stay

I read the most incredible book the other day. Warning: You will cry!!

Mia takes a family ride in the car and ends up in a car crash. She must make a choice between staying or leaving her body. The book jumps between real life and past memories. If I stay sends a great message about living every day to its fullest.

Rainy Days

I don't know about you, but I really don't like rainy days...especially 3 days of it! However, I still see rainy days as the best days for sitting down and colouring. I used to sit and colour for hours when I was younger on days like these. There are tons of free colouring pages available on the web. Just Google using the search terms : free coloring pages

Public Works Day

What a beautiful day to celebrate Public Works Day. The children's department was invited to help out at Public Works Day. There were tons of kids (115) who participated in the arts and crafts activity. The gardeners supplied the plant pots and we supplied the paint. The kids did a great job of decorating their pots. Then, they got to choose a flower to plant in it.

Anne Renaud visit

We had the pleasure of having Anne Renaud visit our library today. She spoke to the Grade 5 class from Merton Elementary. She has written several nonfiction children's books. One of the books, A Bloom for Friendship, was especially interesting to me as it dealt with the Canadian soldiers and the liberation of Holland. My father was part of a regiment that help the Dutch. I recommend that everyone have a look at the book and next year, go to Ottawa and attend the Tulip Festival.

Exploding Volcanoes

This morning we had exploding volcanoes in our auditorium. McGill Redpath Museum came to the library to talk about volcanoes. It was a very interesting presentation. Following that, the kids got to make their own volcanoes.

Receipe for exploding volcanoes:

playdough ( 1 cup of flour, 1/4 salt and 1/2 c of water)
a paper plate
2 paper cups
1/4 cup of baking soda
1/2 cup of vinegar
paint optional
red food coloring optional

Put one cup on the plate. Shape playdough around the cup. Put the baking soda in the cup. You can paint your volcanoe if you choose. Pour the vinegar into the other cup. You can add red food colouring if you choose (mix well) and then quckly add it to your volcano mixture. See what happens!!!

Fragile Eternity

All those Wicked Lovely fans do not have to wait much longer. The library has bought the third book - Fragile Eternity - by Melissa Marr. I have been waiting for this book for a long time. I grabbed this quote off of Wikipedia:
"Seth never expected he would want to settle down with anyone—but that was before Aislinn. She is everything he'd ever dreamed of, and he wants to be with her forever. Forever takes on new meaning, though, when your girlfriend is an immortal faery queen."
I can't wait to read it!

This morning we had the pleasure of having Jennifer Lloyd at the library. We had the grade 3 class from Merton attend the workshop. They were an amazing audience! Jennifer read from her 2 books - Looking for Loons and One Winter Night. After the readings, Jennifer had a craft for the kids to do which kept them quite occupied. A big thank you to Blue Metropolis for including us in their author tour and to Jennifer for coming to our library. I am looking forward to reading her upcoming books.

Newbery Award Winner announced

The Newbery Award Winner for 2009 is "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman. To best illustrate what this book is about, this quote from Mr. Gaiman is most appropriate:

“The boundaries are always there—between the graveyard and the world beyond,
between life and death, and the crossing of them.”

Check here to see if the book is in!

Korman mania

I get really obsessive about authors and must read everything that they have written. My new craze is Gordon Korman. I am currently reading Juvie three which is an excellent book. Be warned though...it is not the traditional humour we are used to with Korman. Last week I finished Son of a mob. Anyone wanting a good laugh must read this book!

Happy 2009!

I don't know where 2008 went but here we are ready to go for 2009. We have lots of exciting programs coming up for all ages. The WOW program this month is Monster Mania where you learn to draw monsters and then get to see them disappear right off the page. How cool is that? Check out our website for all the programs for the winter season: www.eleanorlondonlibrary.org/youth.php
